3 ways to improve the quality of your sleep

How you feel during your waking hours will depend almost entirely on how well you sleep each night. If you don't get enough sleep, or the rest you do get is not enough to recharge your batteries, your day will likely be difficult and unproductive. The key is to find what works best for you.

There are plenty of ways you can prevent this from happening. As long as you make a few small adjustments to your sleep schedule, you will be able to get the rest you need for a happy and healthy day. Getting enough sleep will leave you mentally sharp, emotionally balanced and full of energy.

Here are a few tips that will help you improve the quality of your sleep:

  • Be smart about napping: While napping from time to time can be good for you, make sure that you don't overdo it. Too much napping will throw off your body's internal clock, which can make it difficult to go to bed at night.
  • Fight after-dinner drowsiness: If you find yourself getting sleepy after dinner before your bedtime, be sure to get up and do something at least mildly mentally stimulating to keep yourself awake, such as the laundry or talking to a friend. Falling asleep too early could result in you waking up in the middle of the night, when it will be harder to get back to sleep.
  • Set a regular bedtime: One of the most important things you can do for yourself is set a regular sleep schedule. Going to bed at the same time each night, when your body is losing energy and you won't toss and turn, will help regulate and improve your sleep.
