Can Magnesium Supplements Be Helpful? [Video]

Magnesium occurs naturally in both the body and many common foods. Despite this, studies have shown that most Americans are consuming less magnesium than the recommended amount. Over time, this can lead to increased risk of serious health conditions.

The National Institutes of Health found that symptomatic magnesium deficiency is uncommon in people who don’t have certain health conditions that prevent the element’s absorption, such as chronic alcoholism. However, magnesium inadequacy occurs more frequently, often as a result of gastrointestinal diseases, type 2 diabetes and aging.

If not treated, a lack of magnesium intake can increase the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
