Certain lifestyle choices can bolster memory support, study shows

Alzheimer's disease is undoubtedly one of the most pressing health concerns facing Americans today. This degenerative condition currently affects one in six elderly individuals across the country, and – as the Baby Boomer generation ages – managing this disorder will prove increasingly challenging for caregivers, legislators and medical professionals.

In past posts, we've covered ongoing Alzheimer's research in extensive detail, focusing particularly on how natural brain enhancers like curcumin, the bioactive ingredient in turmeric, may be able to supplement current treatment methods and even prevent the onset of this disease. Now, researchers from the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) have unveiled another key to long-term memory support: healthy lifestyle choices in general.

With the help of the Gallup organization, a national polling company, the researchers analyzed the surveys taken by 18,500 Americans of varying ages and backgrounds to find out how certain habits like smoking, exercising and eating balanced meals could impact an individual's memory.

"We found that the more healthy lifestyle behaviors were practiced, the less likely one was to complain about memory issues," said UCLA professor Fernando Torres-Gil, senior author of the study.

While it's easy to assume that this cognitive issue are primarily a concern for older Americans, it is never too soon to start thinking about memory support. As well as exercising and incorporating documented brain enhancers like omega-3 fatty acids and curcumin into your diet, you can also increase your uptake of these compounds with dietary supplements.
