Enjoy these healthy treats this Super Bowl Sunday

It's only been a month, but already the holiday season seems like a distant memory. That may be why we get so excited to indulge on some truly calorific treats when Super Bowl Sunday comes around. Households across America will be serving up nachos, chili and other platters that are loaded with saturated fats and relatively devoid of nutritional value.

If you are planning to watch the game this Sunday but could do without the onslaught of sodium and calories, you can still enjoy a delicious spread. Consider a few of these healthy alternatives:

Avocado corn salsa – Skip the nachos altogether and lay out a bowl of delicious home-made salsa. Avocado is a delicious superfood that is loaded with good fats. Combine it with corn and diced tomato in this simple recipe from EatingWell.com.

Spiced chickpeas – Another great suggestion from EatingWell, this recipe involves roasting delicious seasoned chickpeas in the oven for a great alternative to salty snacks. Coat the chickpeas with olive oil, cumin, marjoram and other spices for an enticing taste. You can even try a dash of turmeric to reap some curcumin benefits to boot!

Spinach and artichoke dip – The perfect spread for any chip, this filling dip is rich in iron. Be warned that some store-bought varieties may contain more salt and sugar than you may expect, so Health.com suggests whipping it up at home with olive oil, lima beans, cream cheese, capers, mustard, artichoke hearts, spinach, green onions, lemon juice, plus Parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
