If you're battling with osteoporosis or arthritis, even simple motions can prove incredibly painful. However, there is increasing evidence to suggest that certain targeted movement may actually help mitigate the pain caused by these conditions and increase your overall mobility.
"Experts say it's never too late to reap the benefits of exercise, and a program offered in New York City senior centers is improving quality of life for many older adults," a press release from the Hospital for Special Surgery states.
The clinic, which is based in New York, oversaw the introduction of an eight-week course of yoga sessions in various community centers in Chinatown and Flushing intended specifically for members of the Asian community. Why? Because this segment of older adults are particularly at risk for bone conditions, and – in New York at least – statistically have less access to effective treatment due to language barriers and other concerns.
Overall, 199 individuals took part in the programs and 119 responded to a survey regarding the benefits they enjoyed. The majority of these individuals cited improved physical mobility and reduced joint pain after taking part in the sessions.
"People believe that if you have arthritis you shouldn't exercise, but appropriate exercises actually help decrease pain," rheumatologist Dr. Linda Russell said of the results.
