Stress-beating exercise shown to boost brain health

Brain support is a growing concern among people of all ages, particularly in light of recent reports that even younger Baby Boomers have noticed their recollection is starting to slip. As such, in past posts we've featured various lifestyle habits and natural compounds that can potentially help men and women sharpen their cognitive abilities as time goes on.

In addition to seeking out well-known brain enhancers like omega-3 fatty acids and curcumin supplements, engaging in regular exercise has been shown to preserve mental clarity, and a new study has revealed the cognitive benefits of one workout routine in particular.

According to a press release from the University of Illinois, researchers have observed that a 20-minute yoga session could produce immediate benefits for brain health. The scientists recruited 30 young women attending the academic institution and discovered that participants who engaged in yoga "showed more improvement in their reaction times and accuracy on cognitive tasks" than those who completed 20 minutes of conventional aerobic exercise.

"Yoga is an ancient Indian science and way of life that includes not only physical movements and postures but also regulated breathing and meditation," said study author Neha Gothe, who noted that "its potential benefits [for brain health] have not been thoroughly explored."

This exercise has long been viewed as a stress-reliever, and this new study – though somewhat limited in scope – indicates that it may act as a brain enhancer as well. As such, those who are interested in nutrition for the mind should consider incorporating this practice into their routines, as well as seeking out curcumin, omega-3 and other compounds that provide brain support.
